What is at stake if we lose religious freedom?

Our Human Dignity

Every generation seeks to understand freedom, truth, and the relationship between church and state. A fundamental aspect of our human dignity is the ability to reason and respond to truth.

Religious freedom includes both freedom from coercion and freedom for seeking and acting in accordance with the truth. Religious freedom means that a society both refrains from preventing people from living out their religion and creates the conditions for religious expression to flourish. This is true not only for individuals but for communities as well as religious institutions such as schools, hospitals and charitable ministries.

It is imperative for the preservation of our human dignity that people are free to pursue the essential life questions of being, creation, purpose and meaning. This pursuit of truth is facilitated by our ability to listen for and hear God’s word. Religious freedom is a necessary part of any society that promotes human dignity.
