Is America’s secularization good for American democracy?

Time Will Tell

There is no “Catholic” position on this question, so my response is a personal reflection only.

The United States was founded as a secular country by people who came from a Judeo-Christian background. As such, there was a certain foundation in faith upon which the fundamental American vision was formed and government functioned. While American democracy may continue well into the future, the loss of a unified faith perspective will affect how our political process takes place. I am of the opinion that our current political and cultural polarization, with corresponding loss of respectful civil discourse, are byproducts of increasing secularization and decreasing faith values.

American democracy can survive in an increasingly secularized and polarized environment but it will probably become a less pleasant experience. The values of tolerance and compromise could very well give way to imposition and domination of majority will rather than accommodation of minority views.
