What do your scriptures say about divorce and remarriage?

True Marriage Is Permanent

There are abundant scripture passages in both the Old and the New Testament which speak about the permanence of Marriage. Jesus himself taught against divorce and remarriage (Matthew 19:6-9 and related passages). This prohibition is also recorded in Paul’s letters (1 Corinthians 7:10-11 et al.).

These scriptures clearly state that the sacred marriage bond cannot be dissolved because it is an expression of the divine will. However, for the reality of marriage to exist in the first place there must be an unconditional and free commitment to the goods of marriage which include exclusivity (only to one person) and permanence (forever, for better or worse, and so forth).

The reality is that many people today de facto exclude these or other goods of marriage. In so doing, they weaken the marriage bond to such a degree that the full reality may not have existed which can nullify the marriage.
