Knowledge Isn’t Reduced to Visibility

Hebrews 11:1 states, “Faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we don’t see.” This assurance and certainty are both a gift and a mission.

Believing is part of life. We believe in the value of a $10 bill and affirm that belief when the cashier accepts it as a symbol of value, though it is just a piece of paper!

Believing requires confession. God allows us to know him and somehow explain who he is. But his being cannot be exhausted. That’s why faith compensates for the limitations of our reason.

We believe in God because we have experienced him either personally or through others. We believe in faith mysteries because Jesus reveals them to us through his life or by the Holy Spirit. Faith isn’t a rejection of knowledge, but rather a graced elevation of our understanding of God and his creation.
