It’s About Public Decency

The Catholic Church echoes the First Commandment as the premise to our respect for the Lord’s name. Ideally, we expect human laws to be a reflection of natural and biblical laws which seek both individual and common good.

When the fundamental truths of our faith are not supported by civil prescriptions, we hold it as imperative for believers to rather adhere to biblical teachings without detriment or disrespect to the norm of the land.

In the case of blasphemy, an enforcement derived from the first amendment will neither add nor subtract to the fact that the primary duty for Christians is to love God and to honor Him
with all their minds, hearts and understanding.

Blasphemy should ultimately be regulated by public decency and circumstance rather than free
speech laws. Disturbing the peace that causes harm to self or others is never acceptable – like
shouting “fire” in a crowded theater.
